On January 9, 2020 53-year-old James Lamb is being charged with the attempted murder and hate crimes against 70-year-old Meena Puri, an Indian immigrant. Lamb was staying at the Hub Motel in Redmond where he then broke into the manager’s office and attacked 70-year-old Meena Puri, co-owner of the motel with her husband Satish PuriThe attack left Puri with injuries to her throat, a broken shoulder, and a black eye. Lamb was previously charged with hate crimes by saying derogatory terms about Puri’s nationality “and his expressed desire to rid America of people like her.” According to Deschutes County District Attorney’s office a statement by Puri’s attorney John Hummel said, “The victim of this unprovoked assault provided heroic testimony to the grand jury from her hospital bed. Too many people in Oregon are silenced by intimidation and violence because of how they look, who they love, or to whom they pray,” “Because of this woman’s strength, and because the Oregon Legislature passed a law last year to strengthen Oregon’s hate crime law, justice will be delivered in this case,” Hummel said. “Hate is not tolerated in Deschutes County.” As it stands, Puri is still in hospital as of Wednesday and both Puri and her husband Satish are afraid of going back to the motel. “Our life has changed forever,” Satish Puri told The Associated Press Tuesday. “We’re not going to be in the motel business running it ourselves now, and she’s not going to be coming back to this place, ever, because she’s so scared now.” When Lamb was getting his booking photo processed, he was seen smiling broadly. It is still unclear if he has an attorney. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday. According to Deschutes County District Attorney’s office Lamb was charged with not only attempted murder and hate crime, he was charged with “assault, burglary, strangulation, menacing and criminal mischief”.
