The Past Week in Lightning Hockey (1/27/20 – 2/1/20)

After All Star weekend, the Tampa Bay Lightning were sent to Dallas for their first game, after a long break, on January 27th. They played at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX. They played the Dallas Stars, and were actually seeking revenge because the last time they played them, they blew a 3-1 lead at home.

In net for the Stars, was Ben Bishop, former Lightning goalie. For the Lightning, All Star goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy, was in net. First period was scoreless. In the 2nd period, Lightning Captain Steven Stamkos scored, and the Stars, Denis Gurianov scored. In the 3rd period, Stars’ player, Jamie Benn scored, and then Steven Stamkos also scored his 2nd goal of the game. The score was tied after 3rd, and then went into overtime. In overtime, Stars’ Jamie Benn won the game for them, making the final score 2-3, Stars.

On January 29th, the Lightning then played the Los Angeles Kings. This was the first game in Los Angeles after the passing of Kobe and Gigi Bryant, so they honored their passings before the game started. They wore special helmets, shirts beforehand, and made several posts. 

The game was at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. For the Kings, Jonathan Quick was in net. For the Lightning, Andrei Vasilevskiy was in net. In the first period, the only goal scored, was by the Kings’, Tyler Toffoli. In the second period, Kings’ Alex Iafallo scored one goal . Then the Lightning’s Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson, each scored a goal. In the third period, the Lightning’s Erik Cernak scored a goal, then Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the game. The final score was 4-2, Lightning.

Next, on January 31st, the Lightning played the Anaheim Ducks. They played them at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. In net for the Ducks, was John Gibson. For the Lightning, Andrei Vasilevskiy was in net. In the first period, Ondre Palat and Erik Cernak each scored a goal for the Lightning. The Ducks’ Richard Rakell and Michael Del Zotto, each scored a goal as well. In the second period, the only goal scorer was the Lightning’s Anthony Cirelli. Finally, in the third period, Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov scored and so did the Ducks’ Troy Terry. The final score was 4-3, Lightning.

The last game of the week was against the San Jose Sharks on February 1st. They played them at the SAP Center at San Jose in CA. In net for the Lightning was backup goaltender, Curtis McElhinney. For the Sharks, Aaron Dell was in net. The first period was scoreless. In the second period, Lightning’s Steven Stamkos scored a goal. In the third period, Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov and Ondre Palat, each scored a goal. The final score was 3-0, Lightning. This game was Curtis McElhinney’s first shutout of the season.

Ending out the week, the Lightning are now 2nd in the Atlantic division. They are 5th in the entire league, behind the Stanley Cup Champions, the St.Louis Blues, only by 1 point. The Lightning’s next game is against the Vegas Golden Knights, on February 4th, at home, at 7:00pm EST. Make sure to tune in!
