65-year-old Asian American Woman Attacked in New York City

On Monday, March 29th at 11:40 am, on 360 West 43rd Street in New York, NWA 65-year-old Asian woman was attacked on her way to church by an unidentified male suspect while saying Anti-Asian statements like “You don’t belong here,”. The video surveillance around the incident shows the man approaching the woman, kicking her in the stomach, knocking her down to the sidewalk, and stomping on her head multiple timesThe video also showed passerby’s watching the incident unfold and not provide any assistanceA bystander was even seen closing the door on the woman while she is laying on the sidewalk in pain. The bystander was identified as a security guard for a local apartment building called Midtown West Luxury Apartments. The New York Police Department’s Asian Hate Crimes Task Force wrote in a nowdeleted tweet, “The cold-hearted building security guard not only failed to render aid, but he also closed the door on the victim,” The Brodsky Organization, who manages the apartment building located near the incident, released a statement on Facebook claiming, “The staff who witnessed the attack have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union,” the Brodsky Organization also posted an Instagram post, which the company has noted they’re trying to identify a “third-party vendor” who was supposedly also on the scene “so that appropriate action can be taken. New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said in a Twitter post, Johnson also linked the video of the attack on the woman. “This is absolutely vile. These attacks against Asian-American New Yorkers must end,” “Hate has no place here and we must always call it out when we see it.” An update by KHOU 11 and the New York Times, 38-year-old Brandon Elliot is being charged with two counts of hate crime assault and one count of attempted assault as a hate crime. According to police, Elliot was living in a hotel around Midtown Manhattan and had been serving parole while being homeless. According to Cyrus R. Vance Jr, Manhattan’s District Attorney, “Mr. Elliot is accused of brutally shoving, kicking, and stomping a 65-year-old mother to the ground after telling her that she didn’t belong here,” If Elliot is convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison. Local sources noted that in April of 2002, Elliot was charged with murder after using kitchen knife to stab his mother, Bridget Johnson in the chest three times at their East 224th Street home in the Bronx area of New York.
