Anti-LGBTQ Corporations Will Not Receive Any More Donations From Chick-fil-A

After several years of controversy Chick-fil-A has come to the conclusion they will quit donating millions of dollars to corporations that have Anti-LGBTQ+ backgrounds such as Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The company plans to fund charities focused mainly on education, hunger, and homelessness. The Chick-fil-A foundation recently mentioned they will donate $9 million dollars to local food banks, youth financial literacy group Junior Achievement USA, and an organization that provides housing and services to young people without homes called Covenant House International by the start of 2020.

The fast food chain has received backlash over the years for their donations and for CEO Dan Cathy’s public statements against gay marriage saying  in an interview that Chick-fil-A is “very much supportive of” the “biblical definition of a family unit”, suggesting marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Backlash of the Chick-fil-A organization included boycotts, politicians criticizing the chain, Jim Henson Co ceasing a deal to produce toys for happy meals, Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s (in New York) concessions operator Delaware North rejecting to add the restaurant, and now their first location in the UK is closing after its lease expires due to LGBTQ activists. Chick-fil-A is now trying to set a new image for itself by cutting their ties to Salvation Army, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Drew Anderson, GLAAD’s (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) director of campaigns said we should approach the good news with “cautious optimism” since Chick-fil-A has disregarded similar pledges in the past.

Salvation Army responded to the news and said they are “saddened” to hear Chick-fil-A is diverting their funding  and they talked about how they are one of if not the largest providers of poverty relief to the LGBTQ community. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes didn’t respond to the story.
